Braithwaite is renowned for its walks. The books in the cottage living room include Wainwright's famous descriptions of walks in the North Western area - which he regards as the best part of Lakeland, and he should know! His ashes were actually scattered on the top of Haystacks, his favourite fell near here - if you are new to the area, you should make a pilgrimage to Haystacks (which is a great day out in any case). Unless otherwise stated, the walks described below are circular, i.e., they finish where they start, without the need to re-trace your steps. With the necessary transport, you can of course consider the linear walks described towards the end of the article. You can for example take advantage of the excellent local bus services, details of which can be acquired from the Moot Hall, or from the Bus Station outside Booths' supermarket, both in Keswick. Except for the shortest walks you will need a map, for example the Harvey's one or the OS Outdoor Leisure map number 4 (or its recent replacement) for the North West Lakes. As you can see, if you are based in Braithwaite, you're spoilt for choice as far as walks are concerned. However, after staying here for about three years, I decided it might be nice, every so often, to see what the rest of Lakeland has to offer.
