| Alfred Wainwright, who died a few years
ago, spent his life walking the Lakeland fells, and wrote
a famous series of illustrated books covering the whole
area. His favourite part of the Lakes was the North-west
- as witnessed by the fact that his ashes were, at his
behest, scattered on top of one of our north-western
fells, Haystacks. If you haven't already done so, take the opportunity to read his little book on the North-western Lakes - a copy is in the bookcase in Highbridge Cottage, and in every good Lakes' walker's rucksack. I think you will agree that nobody writes books like Wainwright! |
